So on to more shallow and gloriously insignificant things... It's that time of year again when NIP/TUCK comes roaring back with a vengeance, full of piss and vinegar and looking to top any previous story lines they've hitherto attempted to weave.

And from the looks of things... They're planning on starting the season off in true form.
HOT!! LOL, I can't wait to see what they come up with this season! Although, I am sad to report that all preliminary rumors suggest that one of the highlights of last season, COLLEEN ROSE, played by the inimitable SHARON GLESS, won't last long into this next season. She will be missed, but since my girl CANDIS has already started taping her 2 episode arc, I'm sure will be provided with pleNNy of material to fill the void =) And trust me, sweety, NIP/TUCK is the perfect vehicle for you compared to the watered down drivel that DIRTY SEXY MONEY proved to be...

So on my recent flight down to PUERTO VALLARTA for NEW YEARS, I really wanted to pop in a fun DVD to get me in the party mood that was sure to take over us that weekend. Well, to my surprise, I had forgotten that I had ushered the more than 20-year old doc THE TIMES OF HARVEY MILK to the top of my queue after learning that much of the verite footage and dramaturgical research we saw in MILK was pulled from this doc.

Van Sant's film was recently shown to students of the Harvey Milk school and criticized by writer, Nancy Goldstein, for featuring a "pastuerized, homogenized... low-fat" depiction of gay hardships more palatable to mainstream audiences. The film above has a raw power to it and should be required viewing for any homosexual. Surprisingly, the film still has an official website where you can learn more and share your own experience.
Of course, I thought the recent Van Sant film was flawless. I am already bracing myself for the upset that this upcoming ACADEMY AWARDS will be when an LGBT-focused film is robbed of its obviously deserved title of BEST PICTURE. Anyway, the doc's equally as compelling, and while it proved to be much more than mindless plane entertainment, it left me feeling uplifted, encouraged and ready to take on a new day. (A-)
I also finally got around to seeing WANTED, which came tearing through theaters early this summer to much buzz and positive reviews. Well, maybe it's due to the fact that I was coming off of 3 days of NEW YEARS observances, but this joint ultimately proved to be one of those movies that takes you like 4 attempts to get through. One of my faves of the past few years, Scottish JAMES MCAVOY was looking better than ever in this, so that should definitely be noted. What I realized however was that I'm starting to come to terms with settling on the judgment that while I may love what this director, Timur Bekmambetov, does visually, he's really never done anything to really grasp my imagination narratively. The NIGHTWATCH trilogy is a prime example of his masterful eye paired to a muddled and convoluted narrative. There obviously were a number of eye-popping and memorable scenes throughout the film, including the one below.
But needless to say the third act takes a turn for the ridiculous and completely pulls the viewer out of any semblance of the reality that the first 2 acts worked so hard on creating. The movie provides action, just not enough heart. (C+)

That's all.
